Easy Ways to Keep Your Glasses Clean, Clear, and Comfortable

Your glasses go everywhere with you — to work, out with friends, and even to bed for some people. They’re more than just a tool for better vision. They’re part of your daily routine, your personal style, and your comfort. That’s why a little bit of regular care can go a long way.

At Debbie Mozelle Designer Optical in Langley, we’re here to help you get the most out of your eyewear. Below are our go-to tips for keeping your glasses in great shape — including how to use rubbing alcohol safely.

1. Clean Your Lenses With Rubbing Alcohol (the Right Way)

If your glasses feel greasy, smudged, or just plain dirty, rubbing alcohol is one of the best ways to clean them — as long as you use it correctly.

Here’s a safe and effective method:

  • Mix equal parts of rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol) and water in a small spray bottle.
  • Add one drop of mild, lotion-free dish soap.
  • Spray the solution onto your lenses, then gently wipe with a clean microfiber cloth.

This mixture disinfects and cuts through oils without damaging your lenses or frames — and it dries quickly without streaks. It’s perfect for daily use, especially if you’re around screens, makeup, or oily skin.

Pro Tip: Avoid using rubbing alcohol on old glasses with worn or damaged coatings. If you’re unsure, bring them in and we’ll check them for you.

2. Avoid Harsh Household Cleaners

While rubbing alcohol is safe when diluted properly, products like Windex, bleach, or ammonia-based cleaners are not. These can strip anti-reflective coatings, damage tinted lenses, and weaken plastic frames over time.

Stick with a trusted lens cleaner or a homemade rubbing alcohol mix. If you need help finding the right product, we carry cleaning supplies in-store at our Langley location.

3. Always Use a Microfiber Cloth

Paper towels, tissues, and your shirt might seem convenient, but they can leave behind lint, scratches, or even permanent marks.

Use a microfiber cloth — it’s soft, reusable, and designed specifically for delicate lenses. We recommend keeping one in your case or bag so you’re always prepared.

4. Store Your Glasses the Smart Way

Scratches and frame damage often happen when glasses are left unprotected. Always place them in a hard-shell case when not in use, and avoid storing them in hot spots like your car dashboard or on a sunny windowsill.

5. Take Them Off With Both Hands

It might sound small, but using two hands to remove your glasses helps keep the frame aligned. Over time, one-handed removal can stretch the arms, loosen the hinges, and throw off the fit.

6. Come See Us for Free Adjustments

Even the best-fitting glasses need a tune-up now and then. If they’re sliding down your nose, sitting unevenly, or just don’t feel right, drop by and we’ll adjust them for free. We also do minor repairs, tighten screws, and deep clean lenses in our on-site lab.

Final Tip: Keep a Backup Pair Handy

If your glasses are essential to your day, having a second pair is always a good idea. We offer affordable everyday options and stylish designer frames — so you can always have a reliable backup.

Keep Your Glasses Looking and Feeling Like New

Rubbing alcohol, when used properly, is a great way to clean your lenses and extend the life of your eyewear. Pair that with good storage habits and regular adjustments, and your glasses will stay comfortable and crystal-clear for years.
